OUR HISTORY

We've done great things in the past. Today, we're doing great things for the future.

Our rich history of discovery and innovation began more than 125 years ago and continues today. Through the years, our researchers have helped to find new ways to treat and prevent illness in people around the world. We’re focused on making important scientific advances within hepatitis C, HIV, diabetes and immuno-oncology.

Since we began in 1891 in the United States, our researchers have helped to find new ways to treat and prevent illness – including the discovery of vitamin B1; the first measles vaccine; cold remedies and antacids; and the first statins to treat high cholesterol. Our scientists have also helped develop many products to improve animal health, including vaccines and antibiotics.

Our Australian story began in 1952, when Sharp & Dohme became a registered Australian company with two employees at a small site in Rockdale. The company began operations as a distributor, but with the international merger of Merck & Co. and Sharp & Dohme, a new company was subsequently registered in Australia in 1953: Merck Sharp & Dohme (Australia) Pty Limited.

While we are proud of our past, we are enthusiastic about the future. We continue to invent with the hope and expectation that the medicines and vaccines we invent will lead to better health for society and generations to come.

It’s difficult to imagine a world without MSD. And because of what MSD has achieved in the past, we can imagine limitless possibilities for an even better future.

At MSD, we come to work every day imagining a healthier and more hopeful world – and our quest will not be complete until that vision becomes a reality.
