Activity Based Working Environment

Meeting the challenge of change in the pharmaceutical industry requires bold measures and bold thinking. At MSD Australia, our environment has been specifically designed to encourage people to collaborate, create and innovate.

At 26 Talavera Road in Macquarie Park, Sydney, our building has a sense of freedom: freedom from rigid hierarchies and from physical barriers to help us come together in ever-changing groupings depending on the task of the day.

This is at the heart of the concept of Activity Based Working (ABW). There is no assigned seating – not even the top leadership team has offices or even their own desks.

Our office offers a broad variety of different workplaces, including open areas with large tables for team meetings, small quiet desks for concentration, lounge areas and stand-up and walking desks. Work areas are no longer fixedly assigned to employees – instead they choose their work space anew every day.

Communication is enhanced throughout the entire company via the use of an open staircase located in the middle of the office and a fully equipped kitchen on the ground level – a communal collaborating area. The layout of our office assures that despite the exchange culture, there are enough workplaces which provide silence to concentrate. ABW offers all our employees the opportunity to choose a work space that suits individual needs and enhances the likelihood of meeting other colleagues from other departments, therefore fostering exchange, brainstorming and innovative ideas. Recent surveys reveal that current staff would not want to switch back to a traditional office layout.

Luke Cornish, Strategy and Business Development Manager says the building works well for him. “I’ve embraced the idea of moving around depending on the kind of work I am doing. I sit in three or four different places a day. The one drawback is that finding people can be a bit more of a challenge. If I want a couple of hours to concentrate on something, I use one of the little offices. At other times I like to sit where I feel in the thick of things.”

ABW also reduces the logistic effort to provide a work space for every employee, resulting in an overall smaller office and so a smaller carbon footprint. Encouraging its employees to think even greener, MSD has a sustainable commute program, paying employees $10 a day if they leave their car at home and commute to work by public transport, bicycle, on foot or by carpool.

Total Rewards at MSD is comprised of various programs, designed to recognise and reward different aspects of your performance. Our Total Rewards philosophy is to provide employees with a competitive, comprehensive and integrated package of compensation and benefits that supports our combined businesses, as well as a range of employee needs.

Total Remuneration - determined by labour market relativities, an employee’s sustained performance over time, as well as the development of skills, knowledge and abilities.

Variable Pay – where applicable, an incentive payment that rewards performance through the achievement of specific goals and objectives, which may include company, division, and individual results.

Long-Term Incentives - equity-based incentives, such as stock options, that recognise employees' future potential for significant contribution to the company.

Reward Yourself Program – employees receive three "Reward Yourself Days" per calendar year once they reach six months service. Reward yourself days are additional discretionary leave days granted above and beyond other leave entitlements and provisions. Reward Yourself days are an opportunity for colleagues to reward themselves and take the extra time to relax, recharge and re-energise.

Volunteering Policy – employees are eligible – and actively encouraged - to give back to the community. Employees can volunteer up to 40 hours of their time during regular working hours (over the course of a year) toward Company-approved activities at external, non-profit organisations.

Flexible Work Arrangements – with manager approval, flexible work schedules and arrangements to help employee's balance life's responsibilities.

Education Assistance – financial support for higher education is available for eligible employees to cover costs such as of tuition, registration and other fees.

Medicines Subsidy Policy– employees are eligible for reimbursement of the cost of purchasing company products for themselves and their immediate family, to a capped amount per annum.

Purchased Annual Leave – employees may access the Purchased Annual Leave program once they reach twelve months service.

Additional Company Leave Day – a discretionary company leave day granted for the purposes of a company wide holiday.

Paid Parental Leave – competitive paid parental leave for (maternity, paternity and adoption leave) is available for eligible employees, including the ability to access additional paid leave, such as approved accrued leave.

Employee Assistance Program – provides confidential professional assessment, referral, counselling and education services.

Employee Recognition Program – employee reward and recognition program promotes employee engagement and achievement.

Employee Referral Program – be rewarded for encouraging others in your network to join MSD.
